The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 put in place anti-discriminatory laws to protect those with disabilities as well as access requirements for public facilities. These accommodations include ramps, lifts, elevators, and door access buttons However, ADA compliant doesn’t always mean accessible. Charlotte citizens with disabilities still struggle with access to public spaces and information about the accessibility of businesses is often not fully accurate or updated. Convoy aims to put both the recording and dissemination of this information into the hands of those who know best- people with disabilities themselves.
The Convoy brand implements a cool color palette of teal and green, which along with the consistent use of rounded shapes and the guiding dog icon create a strong but friendly and clean look. These core aesthetic elements are carried throughout the products, which are the Convoy App, Convoy Guide Zines, and Convoy Advocate for Access Window Clings and Stickers.
The Convoy App is a native app that acts as a guide to public life for people with disabilities. The app consists of a map feature where businesses with accessibility reviews and information can be located, at-a-glance and full descriptions of a given business’ available accommodations and features, an external listicle page, a saved locations and lists page, and a personal profile. Users can also toggle on a sidewalks feature on the map that marks any construction or broken sidewalks. Two different types of profile are available- individual or business- each with different features geared towards the specific user. The business profile features information on accessibility courses, Convoy partnerships, and access to products such as window clings, stickers, and zines.
The Convoy Guide Zines are a series of mini zines that aim to educate different audiences on accessibility and what they can do to help disabled people. Each zine is type-based and filled with small helpful tips as well as larger actions that can be taken by anyone- from the everyday person to rideshare drivers to business owners. The zines are designed to be printed and handed out by anyone, with black and white and color versions available for a lower barrier to printing them.
The Advocate for Access Modular window clings and stickers take information from the Convoy App into the real world. The window cling set consists of a main logo sticker and selectable supplementary stickers split into three categories- social access, physical access, and Convoy-related achievements. These clings will show those passing by what accessible features a business has as well as commitment to access for all.
Convoy pushes to be a guide, an advocate, and a resource for people with disabilities. By spreading and recording information on accessibility, Convoy can ease some of the pains of everyday life for local citizens who are affected by lack of access.
