I'm Okay (I Promise)- Rolling Stone Australia Editorial * Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, 2023
My Chemical Romance is an American rock band active from 2001-2013 and again from 2020-Present. With a cult following, the excitement surrounding the band's long hoped-for return was palpable, even more so for fans at the further reaches of the world. I wanted to channel this excitement and anticipation into the editorial design. To do this, I created an original illustration of the band's frontman, Gerard Way, in his now-iconic mini skirt wielding a flag in the style of many depictions of Joan of Arc, an important figure in the band's visuals and lyrics since the early aughts. Combining this imagery of a leading figure with the layout of the spread- which is meant to mimic a concert stage and crowd- creates the feeling of anticipation someone would feel waiting for their favorite band to return to the stage after nearly a decade, as the article details. The red and black color palette refers to My Chem's visual history, especially the art from their second album. Every detail comes together to create something that fans of the band- both new and old- can appreciate and see the references to their long career.
Mise En Scene: A Modern Queer Exploration of Claude Cahun * Scanned 4x5 film, Cut Paper, Adobe Photoshop, 2024
Claude Cahun was a queer surrealist photographer from the early 20th century whose work explored gender and an overall feeling of 'otherness'. Their work has been greatly influential to my photography, so to celebrate this I created a coffee table art book based on a modern queer interpretation of Cahun's work. Featuring scanned 4x5 film, hand-cut lettering, and a monochromatic design, the cover captures both a vintage and modern feeling that reflect the overall concept of the book. The title, Mise En Scene, refers to the theater- the set up of actors and stage dressings within a production, much in the same way that gender can be performed, set up carefully and acted out within a real-life or imagined scene. This project combines my two greatest passions- photography and print production- into one narrative object.
