Nova Literary-Arts Magazine Volume 56, Magazine and Poster * Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Print, 2024-2025
Nova Literary-Arts Magazine has a long history at UNC Charlotte. Started as Sanskrit in 1970 and rebranding in 2022, the magazine has been a staple of Student Niner Media for decades. As lead designer for volume 56, I wanted to pull away from the 'tradition' of the editions since the rebrand, which all feature celestial motifs, stars, and similar color palettes. Inspired by the idea of nostalgia, we developed an aesthetic based on late '90s to early 2000's Windows computer systems and early 3D graphics and animation. The idea was fleshed out quickly as a palpable sense of excitement washed over the entire staff- we were excited to break out of the Nova mold. The computer system elements were pulled from Windows 98 with a bluer background to better match the overall palette of the magazine and bring a unique look to our 'desktop' which is repeated throughout. Each spread features the work, custom 'buttons' indicating the type of work (Art, Poetry, Short Story), and a scroll bar that moves down as you flip through the magazine.
